No candles, no burgers, nothing that Merlin had tried before for romance was happening tonight. That ended badly the last time to he was switching it up.

With cookies.

He even managed to get a bit of a variety pack so Francine could pick and chose what she liked best.

It was the culinary equivalent to Barry White.

"I'm....fine?" Francine frowned a little because that was both inaccurate and way too familiar from somebody else protesting the same thing. "Are we supposed to be not-flaily now?" she asked, like he knew the rules. "I think we're supposed to be not-flaily now, but that's kind of still a work in progress."

"I don't feel... flaily. Do you?"

"Hmm. Lemme check." Francine waved her hand around a bit. Nowhere near his face. "I... think maybe mostly no?" Uncertain and unsettled, for any number of reasons, but not flaily. "I'm not gonna break your nose again, anyway."

"I think we may be cured." Said the boy who hadn't actually tried to kiss her again. Or, you know, initiate sex.

"Uh-huh." Forgive her for still being dubious. She'd just actually met both of them. "So if I suggested you get out The Book and look at Chapter 6, your reaction would be..."

She picked it at random, yes.

"What about... um... chapter 10 for you?"

"........................." See, she actually remembered what Chapter 10 was. "......................."

"...should I get you some water?"

"That's okay." Francine scrubbed a bit at her face, because that would totally de-redden it. "Maybe we shouldn't play Sex Book Chicken anymore."

"Maybe." Merlin picked at some cookie crumbs on his lap. "Perhaps we should just move at our own pace on it?"

"I can get behind that." Now that their own pace was mostly post-flailage. "It's not like it's a race. What would the finish line even be?"

Merlin really shouldn't laugh as he said it, but... "Act like Chuck Bass?"

"Well, I like Chuck. That's not so---" Francine... "Chuck's perfectly---" Francine. "He sleeps with anything that moves, doesn't he." There's naivete and then there's denial.

Merlin patted her on the arm. "As long as we don't hit that point."

Francine snorted. "I somehow don't see that being very likely."

"You underestimate how irresistible you are," Merlin teased, scooting forward to put his arms around her waist.

Oh ho, that was totally cheating. "To who? A handful of pervtastic squirrels?" The look was a cross between bitch, please and oh, HAI there.

"Well, me too," Merlin tried, knowing his ears charm only went so far.

"Good answer." Very good answer. "Well, as long as we remember to lock the door so the squirrels can't join us, I don't think we're on our way to Bassville."

That.... really had not been meant as an implication that Chuck had sex with animals.

Merlin laughed, moving in to kiss her for that. "I don't think we ought to be talking about him right now."

"Mhhhmm?" It was kind of hard to talk about anything while you were being kissed, so that was fairly effective. For a bit. "What should we be talking about?"

"We could talk about... cookies?" Merlin suggested, moving one hand up the small of her back.

"Okay," Francine agreed, grinning and reaching in vain for the bag that was... somewhere over there. Dammit. Oh hey, look, that maneuver somehow ended up with Francine a heck of a lot closer. How ever did that happen. "I like your cookies." Even if she couldn't reach them.
