Room 407, Friday Afternoon

After the list of chores that comes from the morning after Arthur's broadcast and then class, Merlin was just settling in to have a spot of private time to read his book. Anything about drinking blood and red eyes would be good to find out more on.

No such luck so far. But he wasn't giving up hope!

Arthur held up one of those hands and stormed past him. "I continue to be astounded by your inability to recognize the fine piece of art that is the cupboard."

It wasn't even that messy! Only a few... shirts on the floor. And trousers.

And his scarf.

"Are you here to critique my ability to keep my room clean?"

"I am here to inspect your chambers," he said, dismissively, and yanked Merlin's scarf off the floor. "Do you ever tidy up at all?"

"When I'm not doing your chores," Merlin replied dryly, going to sit on the bed and calmly push the book further out of sight.

"That's hardly an excuse," he said, and flung the scarf in Merlin's general direction. "I don't believe I've met your roommate, the poor man."

Catching the scarf with his... chest, Merlin rolled his eyes again. "Yes, mother. Sire, I mean, sire."

Arthur paused in his apparent fervour to ransack Merlin's room. What? It was practically tradition by now. "Mother? Have you gone blind as well as delusional?"

"If you start telling me to eat more, you'll be acting like my mother," Merlin pointed out.

"Whatever delusions you decide to have on your own time are yours to have, Merlin," he said. "When is your roommate coming back?"

Merlin shrugged helplessly. "Why?"

"If he's going to be forced to spend time with you, I want to personally wish him my condolences," Arthur snarked. He cast a look at the edge of Merlin's bed, deciding whether or not he'd want to sit down. He stayed upright.

Merlin gave him another look of confusion. "Are you alright?" He normally was much more cheerful if he was insulting Merlin.

"You're not anyone's mother either, Merlin." In case he didn't know that. "How is your roommate?" He'd never bothered to ask, but he was in a mood for it.

"He's fine." Not like he'd had any sort of roommate to measure against. "I'm not getting along as well with him as some."

Pie.

"We can't all be as good at dealing with people as I am, Merlin," he said, briskly. He eyed Cal's things. "As long as everything's safe and no war breaks out between the two of you."

"Sire?"

If Merlin thought he was getting any explanation, he was completely out of luck.

"Don't sit there gawking at me, Merlin," he said, "I'm trying to be..." He seemed to have real trouble finding the word.

Or fake trouble. "'Interested'."

Merlin just gave him a look. "Interested."

"That's what I said, Merlin. How. Are you. Getting. Along?"

"Are you feverish?" Merlin asked, stepping forward to check.

"Merlin," Arthur said, pointedly, "I'm fine. You, however, seem to have lost your head to whatever mental affliction plagues you on a constant basis."

"Just when have you taken an interest like this before," Merlin pointed out, crossing his arms over his chest.

Arthur grunted. "Ealdor," he said. "Or would you like me to name all the places I've ever asked you a damned question?" He was already crabby. This was fun.

Merlin didn't stop giving him a look for this, but it certainly lost it's intensity.

"I'm doing perfectly fine, Arthur." There was a pause when it dawned on him. "How are you?"

"I told you," he said, sitting down on the bed at last, "I'm fine." He eyed Merlin from the side. "I think my arm's got about four more weeks on it." Optimistically. "We'll hopefully be getting a pass home then."
