Room 407, Friday Afternoon

After the list of chores that comes from the morning after Arthur's broadcast and then class, Merlin was just settling in to have a spot of private time to read his book. Anything about drinking blood and red eyes would be good to find out more on.

No such luck so far. But he wasn't giving up hope!

Making sure no random rodents were about, Merlin nodded and retrieved the book. "It's not as interesting as yours..."

"No, it's cool," Tony said. He turned it over in his hands, just looking at the cover. It reminded him a little of a couple of Henry's books. Only this one was less with the skin-crawling evil vibe and more just a sense of power. Potential power? Or maybe it was just that it looked cool.

He sat down on one of the beds and opened the cover.

"I haven't learned it all yet," Merlin said, hovering a bit because, well, he was a bit nervous about this still.

"I'd be really impressed if you had," Tony said, looking at the thickness of it. "Where did you get it?"

"Gaius, the court physician, gave it to me," Merlin replied. "After I arrived there. I even added a few notes in there."

"I can only really do one spell," Tony admitted. "Well, two, if you count protection wards. Which I guess count." He carefully turned a couple of pages, then gently closed the cover and handed it back to Merlin. "Here. I don't want to break it."

Merlin laughed, taking the book. "I don't think you could break it."

"It's a book. Paper," Tony said. "I could tear it or something. Besides, it's yours." It felt very personal to look at Merlin's spellbook. "What language are your spells in?"

"The old tongue," Merlin replied, flipping through it idly. "Though I don't always have to say them."

If he was angry enough, it just sort of happened.

"That's awesome," Tony said. "Eventually I'm supposed to be able to do that, but I don't know if it'll ever happen. What's the coolest magic you've done?"

"The coolest?" Merlin put the book down, rubbing his neck. Most things he did involved protecting Arthur or killing something. "I brought a stone dog to life once."

"Wow, seriously? Did it turn into a real dog or was it living stone?" Tony asked.

"A real dog!" Merlin replied, proudly. "It took all night to get, but I managed it."

"Awesome," Tony said. "Why'd you do it? Or was it just to do it?"

"There was this knight--a complete creep--who was cheating in the tournament with a magic shield and he was going to kill Arthur with these snakes he had on his shield. I needed to reveal his crimes before the court," Merlin said, all in one quick breath. He was far too excited to be able to share these stories with someone.

Tony was totally up for hearing stories about magic and knights and stuff. "But I thought your magic was a big secret back home?"

"He came from another kingdom to compete in the turney," Merlin replied, sitting down on the bed.

"So how did you reveal him without giving yourself away?" Tony asked.

"So, the shield had these monstrous snakes on it, and they would only come to life at his command. And he would hide their attack by pinning his opponent in a way that kept them from the eyes of the crowd," Merlin explained. "So I just had to make them come to life in the open, where he couldn't claim innocence."

"Smart!" Tony said. "How does the dog come into it?"

"I didn't know the spell before then, I needed to make sure I could do it and not just be accused of going mad for all my muttering. So I stayed up the entire night before Arthur's duel with him to learn it."

"What happened to the knight? Because it worked, right?"

"It did," Merlin confirmed. "Arthur defeated him soundly."

And, you know, Merlin wasn't sacked anymore.

"Awesome," Tony said. "I haven't done anything cool with my magic. 'Course, I just found out about it before I came here."

"The things I can do normally just come up when I'm in danger," Merlin replied. "How did you learn about your powers?"
